Summary of Position:
The editor researches, reviews, and revises a wide breadth of content developed by Gateway Church for various audiences. The editor is responsible for the meaning of the content as well as the technical quality. Content may include event promotions, churchwide email blasts, text replies, sermon notes, guest speaker bios, storytelling, testimonials, internal documentation, video scripts, conference materials, and more.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Cultivate a deep understanding of Gateway voice, tone, culture, and brand to ensure aligned messaging (one church with multiple locations).
- Understand Gateway audiences (first-time guest, new believer, new member, mature believer, empty nester, single, young family, etc.) and ensure content lands properly for the targeted reader/listener.
- Facilitate proactive and efficient processes to produce accurate reviews of all projects.
- Perform all levels of edits as needed: developmental, substantive, copy editing, and proofreading.
- Advice on writing projects for best organization, purpose, audience, timing, and channel placement.
- Offer sensitivity writing/DEI solutions to avoid racist metaphors, stereotypes, bias, misrepresentation, and lack of understanding (e.g., last-minute registration vs. walk-up registration).
- Shape content for accessibility (alt text, captions, ASL, plain language for translation/signing, etc.).
- Follow copyright requirements (fair use, attribution, paraphrasing, etc.) on external-facing content.
- Assist with confidential writing tasks, press releases, and crisis communications as needed.
- Nurture writers with teaching moments and opportunities to hone their expertise.
- Support internal communications (IC) strategy and implementation.
- Work with a team to edit and approve scheduled internal, staff-wide messaging.
- Serve as organization-wide knowledge resource, offering style and grammar guidance to other teams; provide research and substantiated arguments for exceptions/major changes.
- Vet evolving grammar and style trends (CMOS); update the Editorial Style Guide annually.
- Direct staff to internal resources to aid their communications (Brand Guide, Style Guide, Style Sheet).
- Serve remotely during Saturday on-call rotation (approximately once/twice monthly).
Required Skills and Job Complexity:
- Unique Skills and Knowledge Excellent communicator with multi-level editing skills. Expertise in The Chicago Manual of Style. Familiarity with The Christian Writer’s Manual of Style is a bonus. Strong analytical and research skills to fact check the accuracy of statistics, claims, generalizations, and unfamiliar topics. Experience with sensitivity writing and writing for accessibility.
- Problem Solving and Decision Making Make decisions that reflect Gateway’s brand and culture without oversight. Discern when to escalate a problem (and solution) to your oversight.
- Relational Connections Work with fellow creatives to concept and develop ideas. Work with marketing coordinators to schedule project tasks. Work with writers to produce clear, concise, error-free content.
- Preferred Education Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, or Communications
- Physical Capabilities Working at a computer. Competencies Critical to this Position Core Competencies Process oriented. Strong grasp of English language. Eagle eye/attention to detail. Adaptable to shifting priorities. Assert constructive edits with a collaborative spirit. Technical Competencies Well-versed in Microsoft Word; experience with Excel and PowerPoint. Experienced with web-based collaborative proofing and annotating copy in a content-management system. Exposure to cloud platforms, such as Box. Experience with project management software (e.g., Monday.com, Wrike, Asana, Trello).
